Chappell Roan With a Sword and Our Other Favorite VMAS 2024 Red Carpet Looks

The Midwest Princess went medieval on the Video Music Awards red carpet.

Chappell Roan served medieval lesbian realness on the red carpet of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, wielding a sword and even carrying a tiny chainmail purse to boot. (Very regal, very demure.) The sapphic pop star arrived at the VMAs in a billowing floor length black dress and velvety green cloak, complete with a cross necklace. As she walked the red carpet, she was literally handed a giant sword by an armored attendant — perhaps a callback to another lesbian legend, Joan of Arc.

Of course, this is far from the first time the Midwest Princess has stunned audiences with her elaborate outfits. From her Governors Ball stint as the Statue of Liberty to her performance on The Tonight Show that paid homage Barbie of Swan Lake, the Midwest Princess doesn’t just make amazing music, she gives drama in all of her costuming choices. In fact, this isn’t even the first time Roan has graced the red carpet in a look fit for the middle ages, lest we forget her possible nod to Miss Piggy in a velvet frock for the album cover of her hit single, “Good Luck, Babe.”

And if there was any reason to go all out, it’s unsurprising that it would be for Roan’s first major awards show appearance since her meteoric rise to fame. On an extra sweet note, Roan’s personal idol and (famously) your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen Sasha Colby also made an appearance during the VMA pre-show in a slinky black see-through number with hair piled to the heavens.

Queer pop is certainly a central highlight of this year’s VMAs, as Roan, Anitta, and Halsey all graced the red carpet before a ceremony hosted by Megan Thee Stallion. Below find our favorite looks from the VMAs 2024 red carpet, featuring LGBTQ+ stars and community icons alike:
