“I was wearing shoes that were totally the wrong size,” she said of discovering her bisexuality.

Dove Cameron was born to play the villain — and she loves it.

In a brand new video for Them’s YouTube series “Becoming,” former Disney star, Daytime Emmy winner and Schmigadoon actress Dove Cameron spoke about her career evolution

Cameron first addressed the role — or rather the roles — that gained her recognition, namely the dual titular parts in the Disney Channel sitcom Liv and Maddie. Sating the curiosity of many adult queer fans of the Disney Channel, she offered some opinions on her character’s likely queer future.

“I definitely imagine Maddie went off to college and was like, Uh, why was I dating boys?” Cameron said, noting that her own experience followed that path. She talked about “how many shapes I had to fit into to date certain men, and then being like, This is painful, this is painful, this is painful. Why does this feel so painful?”

Cameron further noted that her The Descendants character Mal, the daughter of villains Maleficent and Hades, was most definitely in love with Evie, daughter of the Evil queen.

She also said that Hairspray! Live was “still to this day the scariest thing I’ve ever done,” due to the live nature of the show, which offered no chances to do another take. In the production, Cameron played villainess Amber Von Tussle. “Babe, I always play the villain,” she said, laughing. “It’s my queer camp destiny to always play the villain.”

She related her love of playing the villain to her burgeoning music career. “I set out … to make music for the villain who is the main character,” she said. “The villain is the most interesting, complex, and deeply feeling of any film.”

In the video, Cameron goes on to discuss winning a Daytime Emmy for Liv and Maddie, appearing in AppleTV+’s Schmigadoon, and briefly appearing on season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It’s safe to say, there’ll be plenty more coming down the pike.
