Welcome to Libra Season. Libra is all about balance, but that doesn’t mean they live on an even keel. More than anyone else in the zodiac, Libra is an expert at taking huge swings in order to find equilibrium.

Libra doesn’t half-ass anything; Libra whole-asses everything. When a Libra reaches a destination and realizes they don’t quite like the place where they’ve ended up, they pick up and haul their whole ass back in the opposite direction. If Libra eventually ends up straddling a fence, it’s not because they were afraid to choose a side; rather, they’ve simply gone back and forth, checking out every angle, until they were able to locate the vertex of balance located directly in the middle.

Libra has a reputation as a peacemaker — that’s funny. Yeah, sure, if the vibe is frenetically out of control, Libra will attempt to tone down the energy and help everyone relax. But if the atmosphere is feeling a bit too stagnant… well, then! Libra is the cardinal air sign, and sometimes the wind must blow! No one alive has ever behaved in a more outlandish fashion than a Libra who was momentarily trapped in a lull at an already dull party.

Even Libra’s peacemaking is often figuratively violent. Libra can be kind of a weenie about standing up for themselves, but if they see someone else threatened? Libra suddenly grows 12-feet tall and enters a state of berserker rage that only ends when the bully has capitulated and the wounded party is appeased. In subtler circumstances, Libra’s passive aggression is absolutely deadly. When they’re feeling good, Libra is the life of the party! But if they disapprove of the direction of conversation — or worse, if they get hungry — no one can suffuse a room with bad energy quite like a Libra. They have a real talent to make everyone else feel their mood, which should probably be studied scientifically.

For the next four weeks, everyone will be feeling Libra’s mood. Good thing Spirit Halloween pop-ups have overtaken every struggling storefront for the duration of the season! With shadow ruler Lilith and the nostalgic South Node steering Libra’s outlook, we’re all in for a bit of a horror show. But wow, it’s all so surreally beautiful!

Libra
What the stars are up to:
  • The Sun, Lilith, and the South Node are in your sign.
  • Your sign ruler Venus begins the season in your sign, where it squares off against Pluto. Around five hours into your season, Venus leaves your sign and moves to Scorpio. In the last week of the season, Venus leaves Scorpio to move on to Sagittarius.
  • In the last week of September, Mercury leaves Virgo and moves to your sign. In mid-October, Mercury leaves your sign and moves to Scorpio.
  • In your sign, the Sun and Mercury pass through conjunction with the South Node, Lilith, and each other; square off against Mars and Pluto; create a trine with Jupiter; and oppose Chiron.
  • The New Moon in your sign passes through conjunction with the Sun, causing an annular solar eclipse.
What it means:

This is a season for you to delve into your dark side. If you’re a regular reader here, I apologize for boring you with the same old long-time news: Lilith and the South Node of the Moon’s orbit are in your sign. Ruler of the psychological shadow and anchor to your past, blah, blah — you know the drill. Now, the ego-governing Sun joins them in your sign and amplifies the effects of both. You’re about to reach depths of yourself you never knew existed.

Your sign ruler Venus sneezes at Pluto and hops out of your sign before your season is six hours old, then tears across Scorpio into Sagittarius. While you’re coping with intense urges to expand your own damage in order to further explore it, Venus infuses you with overconfident desire to get your life together, then drops you down a well of fixation on your personal history.

But wait, there’s more! The New Moon in your sign blocks the light of the Sun from Earth in an annular solar eclipse. Because the Moon in your sign is way out there, relatively speaking — Lilith is actually a coordinate in space, the location of the Moon’s farthest point of its orbit from Earth — it doesn’t loom close enough to Earth to fully hide the Sun from view. Instead, the Sun gleams around the edges of the Moon to form a fiery ring during the eclipse. Your emotions try to overwhelm you, but your self is just a bit too enormous to be consumed.

Scorpio
What the stars are up to:
  • Venus begins the season in Libra, where it squares off against your sign ruler Pluto. On the first night of the season, Venus leaves Libra and moves to your sign.
  • Venus creates trines with Saturn, Mars, and Neptune; opposes Uranus; and forms a sextile with Pluto. Then, Venus leaves your sign and moves to Sagittarius.
  • Your sign ruler Pluto is retrograde in Capricorn. In mid-October, Pluto turns direct.
  • In mid-October, Mercury leaves Libra and moves to your sign. On the last day of the season, Mercury creates a trine with Saturn.
What it means:

I want to make jokes about Venus in Scorpio causing an inescapable avalanche of sexiness, but (un?)fortunately, the planetary relationships this season are looking more like you’re going to experience an immense craving to fulfill your professional ambitions. You’ll probably bite your tongue by accident at some point along the way, or even wish you could swallow it during a vulnerable moment. But at the onset of October, your dwarf planet sign ruler Pluto abandons its latest retrograde and turns direct in Capricorn for the last time in our lifetimes. Then, you absolutely won’t be able to stop yourself from stomping determinedly after your goals.

Sagittarius
What the stars are up to:
  • Your sign ruler Jupiter is in your sibling sign Gemini. In October, Jupiter turns retrograde. Then, Jupiter forms a sextile with Chiron.
  • In Libra, the Sun and Mercury create trines with Jupiter.
  • In the last week of the season, Venus leaves Scorpio and moves to your sign. Venus creates a trine with the North Node.
What it means:

Your Libra Season is relatively relaxed. Your sign ruler Jupiter turns retrograde, and it will drift perspectively backwards until February 2025. This isn’t a disaster on par with an inner planet retrograde — it’s hard to truly harsh Jupiter’s mellow vibe — but it is likely to slow your roll for a time. To be frank, you probably need the break! Shortly after turning retrograde, Jupiter joins forces with Chiron to promote healing. Near the end of the season, the action picks back up when Venus moves to your sign and immediately sprints off into the future in spontaneous elopement with the North Node.

Capricorn
What the stars are up to:
  • Pluto is retrograde in your sign. On the first day of October, Pluto turns direct.
  • Your sign ruler Saturn is retrograde in Pisces.
  • In Scorpio, Venus and Mercury create trines with Saturn.
  • In Cancer, Mars creates a trine with Saturn.
  • The First Quarter Moon in your sign squares off against the Sun.
What it means:

Sometimes little subconscious typing slips foretell the future more accurately than other methods of divination. For example, once upon a time when jotting down celestial choreography in Pisces, I was trying to write, “Mercury squares off against Mars” and instead typed out, “Mercury squares off against Mom.” Yikes! I hope Pisces won their parental squabble. In that vein, this season when I tried to write, “On the first day of October, Pluto turns direct,” instead I typed, “On the first day of October, Capricorn turns direct.” This was an accident, but I don’t think it’s inaccurate!

Your sign ruler Saturn is still retrograde, but your productivity receives multiple boosts from Venus, Mercury, and Mars. The First Quarter Moon in your sign inspires some soul searching, but never fear! You will survive the brief bout of introspection.

Aquarius
What the stars are up to:
  • Your sign ruler Uranus is retrograde in Taurus.
  • In Virgo, Mercury creates a trine with Uranus.
  • In Scorpio, Venus opposes Uranus.
What it means:

Mercury is briefly enamored with your sign ruler Uranus, empowering you with eloquence in the early days of the season. But when Venus moves to Scorpio, romance might feel impossibly distant for you. Fret not! You’ll find plenty of fun ways to occupy your time regardless of your ruler’s far-away removal from the fervor of desire. You simply can enjoy the atmosphere of a fellow air sign season, when the temperature grows brisk and casual conversation becomes stimulating.

Pisces
What the stars are up to:
  • Both Saturn and your ruler Neptune are retrograde in your sign.
  • In Scorpio, Venus creates trines with Saturn and Neptune.
What it means:

You get some love when Venus becomes enraptured with Saturn and Neptune in your sign, pushing you to organize your goals and pursue your ideal fantasies. The waxing gibbous Moon is also kind to you in mid-October, amping up your inclinations to adaptability, responsibility, motivation, innovation, attraction, intuition, and renewal. Good deal! On the whole, the breeze of Libra Season should feel pretty pleasant for you, ruffling up gentle waves across the surface of your water sign soul.

Aries
What the stars are up to:
  • Chiron and the North Node are retrograde in your sign. (The North Node is always generally retrograde, that’s normal.)
  • Your sign ruler Mars is in Cancer. Mars creates a trine with Saturn and squares off against Chiron.
  • In Libra, the Sun and Mercury oppose the North Node and Chiron and square off against Mars.
  • In Scorpio, Venus creates a trine with Mars.
  • In Sagittarius, Venus creates a trine with the North Node.
  • The Full Moon in your sign opposes the Sun.
What it means:

Your Libra Season is a little complicated: Both the boons and the trials are big. Your sign ruler Mars is still in Cancer, rendering you soggy with liquid emotion. The Sun and Mercury are piqued with Mars and distant from your tenants, Chiron the healer and the North Node of destiny. You’re likely to face some difficulty with understanding and discussing your own perceptions this season, and the Full Moon in your sign lights up your insecurities. But you catch some grace from Venus, which smiles upon your sign ruler Mars and the North Node in your sign. You’re a person of action, more accustomed to pursuing wants rather than waiting for your desires to come to you, so this period may be a bit tough. Patience can be difficult to cultivate, but take heart: You always love a challenge!

Taurus
What the stars are up to:
  • Uranus is retrograde in your sign.
  • In Virgo, Mercury creates a trine with Uranus.
  • Your sign ruler Venus begins the season in Libra, where it squares off against Pluto. Around five hours into your season, Venus leaves Libra and moves to Scorpio.
  • In Scorpio, Venus creates trines with Saturn, Mars, and Neptune; opposes Uranus; and forms a sextile with Pluto. Then, Venus leaves Scorpio and moves to Sagittarius.
  • In Sagittarius, Venus creates a trine with the North Node.
What it means:

Your sign ruler Venus spends much of the season partying in your sibling sign Scorpio. You can see Venus splashing around over there, making friends with all of the planets that are currently located in water signs. Though you and Uranus are located too far away to participate directly, your connection with Venus will allow you to vicariously enjoy the fun. Through your patron planet, you’ll feel energized to begin new projects. You may be conflicted about your creativity, but Mercury will help you talk through the problem.

Gemini
What the stars are up to:
  • Jupiter is in your sign. In October, Jupiter turns retrograde. Then, Jupiter forms a sextile with Chiron.
  • In Libra, the Sun and Mercury create trines with Jupiter.
  • In Libra, the Sun passes through conjunction with Mercury.
  • Your sign ruler Mercury begins the season in Virgo, then moves to Libra.
  • In Libra, Mercury opposes the North Node and Chiron, passes through conjunction with Lilith, squares off against Mars, and creates a trine with Jupiter. Then, Mercury leaves Libra and moves to Scorpio.
What it means:

Jupiter turns retrograde in your sign, then does you a favor when it high fives Chiron to promote healing. Your sign ruler Mercury stays busy throughout the season, as is its custom, flitting through three signs and causing drama in each one. Mercury’s stretch in Libra is dangerous. It will tempt you to defy the forces of destiny and healing to dwell with the darkness of Lilith. Consider setting some safety boundaries before you reach this point, because good decision making will be difficult in the moment. But ultimately, you’ll be fine! Lucky Jupiter has got your back, with assists from Mercury and the Sun. Have fun surfing in the season’s turbulence!

Cancer
What the stars are up to:
  • Mars is in your sign. Mars creates a trine with Saturn and squares off against Chiron.
  • In Libra, the Sun and Mercury square off against Mars.
  • In Scorpio, Venus creates a trine with Mars.
  • Your sign ruler the Moon travels through the entire zodiac, moving through Gemini and your sign twice at the beginning and end of the season.
  • The Last Quarter Moon in your sign squares off against the Sun.
  • The New Moon in Libra passes through conjunction with the Sun, causing an annular solar eclipse.
  • The First Quarter Moon in Capricorn squares off against the Sun.
  • The Full Moon in Aries opposes the Sun.
What it means:

Solar eclipse season has arrived! This time, your lunar sign ruler the Moon is way out at the furthest point of its orbit, hanging out with Lilith in Libra when it steps in front of the Sun. That's why the eclipse is annular, rather than total, and a ring of fiery sunlight will remain visible around the Moon’s edge at the eclipse’s maximum coverage. During this eclipse, your emotions can’t quite obliterate your entire ego, and you’ll maintain your sense of self!

Mars gets a little belligerent in your sign, fighting with the ruler of healing and defending itself from attacks launched by the representatives of communication and self-understanding. But Venus reaches out to send Mars some love from Scorpio, so amorous encounters should be especially satisfying this season.

Leo
What the stars are up to:
  • Your sign ruler the Sun is in Libra. The Sun opposes the North Node and Chiron, passes through conjunction with Lilith and Mercury, squares off against Mars and Pluto, and creates a trine with Jupiter.
  • The New Moon in Libra passes through conjunction with the Sun, causing an annular solar eclipse.
What it means:

It’s solar eclipse season again, but baby, this time you’re just too big to be shaded! The annular eclipse’s brilliant ring of visible sunlight will help you keep a grasp on yourself while you confront an exciting ending and fresh new beginning.

Throughout the season, the Sun is interested in helping you delve deep into your interiority and investigate past events, rather than pressing on toward the future. Being a star, the Sun should help light your path through the lower caverns of your mind and heart, but still: it couldn't hurt to bring a flashlight and some snacks along, just in case.

Virgo
What the stars are up to:
  • Your sign ruler Mercury begins the season in your sign, where it creates trines with Uranus and Pluto and opposes Neptune. Then, Mercury leaves your sign and moves to Libra.
  • In Libra, the Sun passes through conjunction with Mercury.
  • In Libra, Mercury opposes the North Node and Chiron, passes through conjunction with Lilith, squares off against Mars, and creates a trine with Jupiter. Then, Mercury leaves Libra and moves to Scorpio.
  • In Scorpio, Mercury creates a trine with Saturn.
What it means:

Your planet Mercury frolics into the season with you, encouraging radical innovation without paying much attention to intuition. But Mercury is like one of those butterfly friends who accompanies you to a party only to flit away once you arrive. Once it moves on to Libra, Mercury causes some trouble, encouraging dark urges and leading you to fixate on past injuries. Go ahead and sulk about it for a while; it’ll be all right. When Mercury eventually moves to Scorpio it gets back to business, teaming up with responsible Saturn to help you get back to work.
